Waikerie’s Senior Heroes Lead The Way
In just under a year, Waikerie Community Sport Centre (WCSC)’s Strength for Life program has helped dozens of locals aged 50 and over stay active, build confidence and connect through movement.

The Strength for Life program, offered by Council on the Ageing South Australia (COTA SA), promotes health and well-being for people aged 50 years or more, assisting in alleviating the effects of chronic conditions such as Arthritis, Type 2 Diabetes, Osteoporosis and Heart Disease.

Council on the Ageing South Australia (COTA SA) is an older people’s movement and the peak body that represents the rights, interests and futures of the more than 700,000 South Australians aged 50+.

With the program going from strength to strength at WCSC, 48 locals have now completed their consultations and four sessions run every week, giving older locals access to personalised strength and balance training.

In the wake of the program’s success, WCSC is preparing to mark the program’s first anniversary in November.
When Arno Dasan, Personal Trainer at WCSC joined the venue, he trained with COTA to become a Strength For Life instructor. With limited fitness options for seniors in the area, this program filled a huge gap. He commented:

“The program is all about building strength, independence and confidence and having a laugh while doing it. It’s a great way to meet new mates and feel good both physically and mentally.”
Hayley Collins, Venue Manager at WCSC said:

“One of my favourite things about the program is the social aspect, seeing the interaction & laughter along with the actual exercise – having a service we can offer our senior community is really special.”
WCSC strives to support all in the community to connect and benefit from the services, programs, employment and facilities it provides. Through participation in these experiences, all people are provided access to opportunities that can contribute to improved health and happiness, irrespective of any personal characteristic or circumstance.

One year on, the Strength For Life program has proved to be a safe space for the locals at Waikerie Community Sports Centre: where they have built community, connection and a whole lot of momentum.
